So what is Paediatric Plastic Surgery?

Paediatric Plastic Surgery is reconstructive surgery that aims to restore and improve the function or the cosmesis (“aesthetic”) of all children from newborns to teenagers, which may have resulted from genetic issues, injuries, operations or illnesses. “Plastic” is a strange word but the origins for the word for the speciality comes from the Greek word for “Moulding” (πλαστική - plastikē), as in a plastic surgeon is able to mould/change the body's tissues with the ultimate aim of helping the child function normally within society with improved confidence.

What does a Paediatric Plastic Surgeon do?

A paediatric (children’s) plastic surgeon reconstructs any area of the child’s body including the skin, fat, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and even the smaller bones of the hand and foot. Children may be born with issues (congenital) or have injuries, operations or illnesses that lead to a whole range of problems that need to be fixed and there are usually a range of operative options.
